Using A Self Tan Product At Some Point In Pregnancy

By Haywood Hunter

A self tan product is often used by ladies, and by men as well, to create a natural-looking tan without the need to suntan. The products are useful to someone who is worried about the damaging effects of the sun's UV rays. This worry is not unfounded, as it has been proven that the sun can dehydrate the skin, cause wrinkles and dark spots, and can even cause skin cancer. A good result can be achieved with a self tan product.

When a woman is pregnant is always wise to be careful with all products that are consumed or used on the body. She must keep the safety of her unborn child in mind. A self tan product, however, is safe to use during pregnancy. They have been tested by dermatologists and are simply a skin, color-changing formula. They are not absorbed into the body to where they could be harmful to a developing fetus.

Many people have felt that a sunbed is a safer way to get a tan. Research has been done on their effects as well, and has not revealed much positivity. The beds use the same UV rays as the sun, and therefore have the potential to cause the same problems. There are none of the harmful UV ray effects in a self tan product.

Sunbeds have not been found to be damaging to a unborn child. The mother should still be careful though, as if they are used too often there could be a variety of health problems that are caused that could end up affecting the placenta. If this happens, there will be an effect on the unborn child. A self tan product, however, will not be damaging to the health of the mother or baby.

The intense heat of a sunbed is something else to consider. A fetus, in its very early stage of development, should not be exposed to extreme temperatures. It may also be uncomfortable for her to lie on her back for a long time, and this position is not very good for the baby either, as it reduces the flow of blood to the fetus. For this reason, it is better to consider a self tan product.

A self tan product in the form of sprays or creams does not permeate the skin and reach the bloodstream of a person. It is therefore quite safe to use when pregnant. Keep in mind that the products do not act as a protection against the sun's UV rays, so if you are going out in the sun, be sure to apply a good sunscreen. Sunscreen will not take away your tanned look, and will not react negatively to the lotion.

With all this said, however, the self tan product does contain the substance referred to as DHA, or dihydroxyacetone. Chemicals such as these are better to avoid altogether when in the first trimester of pregnancy. This is the ingredient that causes the skin to change color.

When a woman is pregnant, she reacts differently to many things. This may be the case with the odor of the self tan product. To a pregnant lady it may be overwhelming. Her skin may also be more sensitive than usual, and then it is best to avoid the use of skin creams. When applying self tan product, it's recommended for her to first test the cream on a hidden part of her body.
